Resumo

Since the 1990s, European cities have shown a growing interest in sustainable development, particularly in the field of transportation. With the support of the European Union, several city networks are very concerned about this issue. However, efforts are still very uneven and are mostly realised by mediumsized cities. In addition, a cleavage emerges between cities that consider sustainable transportation rather as a marketing operation and those that are driven by deep environmental convictions. At the local level, the functioning of urban regimes provides some key explanation to the implementation of sustainable transportation policies. The role of local politicians, their ability to find a balance between ecological project and economic interests, but also the influence of certain segments of civil society are crucial factors.
