SKEMA's oenology students win second place at Left Bank Bordeaux Cup
The "Gargantue’sk" student association of SKEMA Business School, consisting of Martin Rué, Eliott Madiot, Hippolyte Moulin, and Guillaume Coffignal, has finished second, for the second consecutive year, at the Left Bank Bordeaux Cup. This highly prestigious event draws the crème de la crème of the world's best universities.
Let's dispel a misconception. No, the Left Bank Bordeaux Cup is not merely a competition of inexperienced young palates. It is primarily an annual gathering of the world's best representatives of oenology, among a selection of 60 universities and grandes écoles, including McGill, UCLA, Oxford, Cambridge, and Hong Kong. At a competition organised at the heart of the stunning Château Lafite Rothschild, amidst the pastoral Gironde vineyards, the students cross their wine glasses and their wine culture in a contest of the highest level.
Challenging questions
In tasks far from straightforward, one was required to, for example, be able to name one of the wines served at the wedding of Britain's King George VI, or to date the fire of a vineyard in the 17th century. Following this cultural joust, the competitors had to differentiate themselves during a tasting sequence under the watchful eyes of a jury composed of eminent specialists in viticulture and trade. "There were general knowledge questions and a tasting part, with three rounds of three glasses. This competition also enabled students to visit estates. It was a great experience alongside students from universities like UCLA, McGill, and Hong Kong," explains Guillaume Coffignal, a student of the Master in Management (PGE) programme and a native of Bordeaux.
The students of SKEMA Business School were the runners-up in this prestigious competition, behind ENSTA Paris and ahead of UCLA. We are sure they will clinch the crown next year!
