Scottish student Timothy Jackson, and Dutch students Tom Hoyng and Stijn Van Meerten all joined NC State’s rugby club as soon as they arrived in Raleigh for their semester at SKEMA.
They started training twice a week with the team, and immediately felt welcomed and included. The team had a strong season, with five wins and no losses, and progressed to the next stage: the National Collegiate Rugby Championship. They travelled to Virginia for the event, and won against a team from Vermont, which awarded them the title of East Regional Champions and qualified them for the semi-final in Houston, Texas, where they finished third place!
Played in a stadium
“The national championship was exciting. We played in a stadium, which was the first for a lot of players. The games were intense and physical. Although we lost, the experience was great. Taking home third place was a nice achievement to reflect the team's hard work and commitment over the season.” - explains Tom Hoyng.
Thanks to SKEMA’s partnership with the prestigious NC State University, any SKEMA students on the Raleigh campus can join one (or more) of NC State’s 700 student clubs, including many sport clubs.
“[Joining the rugby club] made my time in America extremely special. I was able to connect with Americans from many different states and learn a lot more about US life, universities and the country itself.” shares Timothy Jackson.
