Two students want to use blockchain to authenticate artworks

"Galerie marchande" is a startup created by Doriane Charrier and Samy Ozdalkiran, students in the Master in Management (PGE) programme, and incubated by SKEMA Ventures, SKEMA's incubator-accelerator. Their project, to combine art and certification via a blockchain, was chosen by a jury composed of the Metropole Européenne de Lille, KissKissBankBank and PEPITE Hauts-de-France to benefit from a large communication campaign on the territory of the Lille metropolis.

"We discovered that 90% of the paintings offered for certification are counterfeit. That is where we got the idea to create Galerie Marchande", explained Doriane Charrier, an L3 Master in Management (PGE) student on the Lille campus and the founder of Galerie Marchande, along with Samy Ozdalkiran, also a SKEMA L3 student, and Ilyas Kheribi, an Artois University graduate.

With their start-up, the three entrepreneurs want to directly sell works of art produced by living artists, so as to guarantee the authenticity of the works sold, with all this taking place on a marketplace they created themselves.

To authenticate the artwork, the students wish to use blockchain technology to produce digital certificates of authenticity. "We are drawing inspiration from the technology used by NFTs and cryptocurrencies, but we don't speculate. Our goal is to reassure the buyer", added Doriane Charrier. The students intend to take a commission on the sales to pay themselves. "At the moment, around thirty artists have responded positively to our approach, mainly in the Hauts-de-France region. We have illustrators, painters and sculptors", said Doriane Charrier proudly.
