A team of Brazilians from the Brazil campus BBA won fifth place in the competition with postgraduate and master's students.

At the end of January, three BBA students from SKEMA Brazil, currently on the Raleigh (USA) campus, participated in the Make-A-Thon challenge at NC State University, competing against other teams to create the best solution for a sustainability challenge won fifth place.

The event, which has been held annually for eight years, brings together undergraduate, graduate and master's students in teams to compete and create solutions to societal problems. The team of Brazilian students (Júlia Amaral Nunes, Maria Clara Teixeira and Fernando Lacerda), addressed the problem of unhealthy eating among university students in the US and, as a consequence, the high rate of obesity and heart disease.

Healthy, easy and affordable eating option

Their proposed solution consisted of creating microgreens containers at universities to provide a healthy, easy and affordable eating option that students can incorporate into their daily meals; and promoting workshops on the importance of healthy eating to raise awareness among the student population.

“It was an incredible and intense experience to develop our design thinking and research skills and to come into contact with professionals and resources.” commented Júlia Amaral Nunes. They worked with mentors and developed a business model, 3D printing prototype, website and marketing campaign around their idea. At the end of the competition, they presented their proposal to local companies and judges.
