Gwennaëlle Caër (SKEMA 2023): Alumna of SKEMA and Aspiring European Affairs Expert
Gwennaëlle Caër, a graduate of SKEMA Business School’s Master in Management (PGE) programme and a dual degree in Business Law from SKEMA and Université Littoral Côte d’Opale, is poised for a promising career in European institutions or law firms specialising in tech-related issues. Having passed the bar during her first year of her master’s, she now studies at the highly selective College of Europe in Bruges, often referred to as the "European ENA."
How did SKEMA Business School contribute to your journey?
SKEMA was a true academic springboard for my career. The versatility of the curriculum allowed me to build a strong foundation essential for tackling complex challenges. I particularly valued courses on competition law, free movement of goods, and negotiation, which provided me with an in-depth understanding of the economic and legal mechanisms of the European Union.
Beyond legal subjects, SKEMA equipped me with practical technical skills. Finance classes and mastering Excel gave me hands-on tools I still use in my professional experiences. The professors’ support, dedication, and investment in our success were also invaluable.
One highlight was writing a thesis on the European Public Prosecutor's Office at SKEMA. This experience set the stage for my current research at the College of Europe, focusing on disinformation and artificial intelligence—fields that fascinate me and where I aim to build my career.
What key lessons do you take away from SKEMA?
SKEMA played a pivotal role in shaping my professional aspirations. I gained versatility that allows me to navigate across fields like law, public affairs, and emerging technologies.
The blend of theoretical knowledge and practical skills SKEMA provided has been a game-changer in the real world. I also cherish the enriching exchanges with classmates and the dedication of professors, which made this chapter a cornerstone of my journey.
Your professional journey is already impressive. Could you share more about it?
I’ve had the privilege of gaining diverse and complementary experiences. My early internships in law firms like BG2V and Alerion introduced me to intellectual property and digital regulation, exposing me to the fast-evolving challenges of technology and its legal frameworks.
At Mazagan, a public affairs and European policy consultancy, I deepened my understanding of EU policies, working on landmark legislation like the Digital Services Act (DSA) and the Artificial Intelligence Act (AI Act). Analysing their impact and engaging with key stakeholders strengthened my expertise in regulation and gave me insights into Europe’s political and economic dynamics.
My time at Transparency International was another turning point. Handling whistleblower reports, contributing to legal investigations, and supporting transparency initiatives highlighted the critical role of ethics and governance.
Why did you choose the prestigious College of Europe?
The College of Europe is a world-renowned institution for training future European leaders. Its highly selective admissions process brings together Europe’s brightest students in a stimulating intellectual and professional environment.
Under the leadership of Herman Van Rompuy (former President of the European Council) and Federica Mogherini, the College embodies European excellence and ambition. Its intensive one-year programme closely ties academic learning to European institutions, offering opportunities to work on strategic issues, interact with experts, and build a unique European network. This experience is helping me solidify my understanding of EU policies and prepare for an active role in shaping Europe’s future.
What are your future plans?
My ambitions lie at the intersection of law, digital regulation, and European institutions. I envision a career in European public affairs consultancy or within organisations such as the European Commission or the Court of Justice of the European Union. The Court, in particular, appeals to me for its pivotal role in interpreting and applying EU law, ensuring stability and development within the Union.
Additionally, I’m deeply passionate about digital issues, including AI regulation, disinformation, and data protection. These areas demand innovative and forward-thinking solutions, and I’m eager to contribute to these advancements. A legal career in a law firm could also allow me to leverage my dual expertise in law and public affairs.
Any final thoughts?
SKEMA has been instrumental in preparing me to tackle European challenges. My time at the College of Europe has made me appreciate how these experiences have provided the foundation to thrive in complex environments. I’m grateful for the opportunities I’ve had so far and excited to play an active role in shaping Europe’s future.
