The Covid-19 crisis has pushed distance learning to the front of the academic stage. It has gone from a peripheral tool to an inseparable companion in the space of a year. The manual, published by Vuibert and with a preface by Alice Guilhon, came out. It gives the keys to negotiating this path.

In this operational guide, entitled “Pro en Formation à distance “, the contributors provide readers with many real examples based on their own experience. The book includes 62 tools and 14 action plans for trainers, teachers, speakers, etc. It has it all, from creating the relevant media for distance learning to using a style of education that will inspire students, from the trainer’s posture in front of the camera to how to capture the learners’ attention.

“The idea for this book came during a discussion with Thierry. I had lots of material on the subject”, says Jean-François Detout, director of the MS Manager Marketing Data and E-Commerce. They began writing the book at the end of 2020, while in lockdown, and finished it in April 2021.

Motivating your audience to “break the ice”

Teaching online is not the same thing as teaching “in real life”. On the other side of the screen, the audience may be more scattered and, above all, less motivated.

This is why it is essential to capture the learners’ attention by breaking the ice. Jean-François Detout and Thierry Cuirot give several tips for doing so in this book. “The teacher must reconsider the substance of their teaching and this can mean redesigning their lesson plan and developing new online sequencing to make the content more digestible”, they explain.

Pacing and varying the content

More importantly, the teacher must use a faster pace and high intensity in these distance learning lessons and vary the activities. “Motivating the students also means relying on tools that are liable to get their attention and encourage interaction”, say the two authors. This books lays the foundations for the future of education, it opens up a new avenue of teaching!
