Striking the right chord: Antoine Vasseur’s dual pursuit of music and management
From the Lyon Conservatoire to the Master in Management (PGE) programme at SKEMA Business School, our student Antoine Vasseur is following his artistic dream without compromising on his education. This 21-year-old third-year Master in Management (PGE) student from Grenoble not only handles the cello with the precision of a soloist but also effortlessly conveys the full musical power of a classical piece.
Hailing from Drôme, in southeastern France, Antoine Vasseur started playing the cello at the age of five. His beginnings remind us of a certain Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, who once travelled across Europe and its royal courts, delighting audiences with his harpsichord performances.
Passionate about music, Antoine Vasseur enrolled at the Conservatoire of Romans-sur-Isère, where he mastered the cello, a particularly demanding instrument. “At the age of 13, I began playing in a symphony orchestra within the conservatoire of Romans," says the PGE student without a hint of pretension. Music notes took him and his cello to distant lands, such as Armenia, where he participated in a concert with a binational orchestra.
Lyon, the pinnacle of musical excellence
In 2017, while still in high school, he joined the Lyon Conservatoire where he remained for three years. In 2020, he earned his musical studies certificate in cello, the Holy Grail for any respectable musician. Simultaneously, he joined the National Youth Orchestra of Lyon for four years as a section leader. After this period, Antoine decided to continue his studies at the Institution des Chartreux in Lyon to prepare for management school entrance exams while still playing the cello.
SKEMA, the pinnacle of academic excellence
In 2023, he joined SKEMA Business School's Master in Management (PGE) programme, on the Lille campus, which he chose partly for its rich associative and musical life. As the president of the “SoNord" association, he works with his team to organise the association's annual music festival: “Nuisances SoNord," which invites musicians from the top schools in Lille to share an artistic stage for an evening. An engaged student, he recently travelled to Barcelona with Paul-Andréa Boghos and Clotilde Mario, a pianist and violinist, respectively, to play the cello as part of the “Trophée des Arts," an inter-school competition, where he won the second place in the Classical Music Competition. While pursuing his passion for music alongside his studies, Antoine has a clear vision of his future. “I see myself managing a concert hall, a performance venue, running a studio, or a label. To pursue this path, I plan to join UCLA and take the Digital Marketing and Entertainment or Music Business programme offered by SKEMA," he confides.
