Young professionals from the MS Supply Chain & Purchasing in Lille visit an Amazon distribution centre

On Thursday 12 October, Maximilian Rech, Director of the Supply Chain & Purchasing Management programme, and all his students from the Lille campus had the opportunity to visit an Amazon distribution centre in Lauwin-Planque, 30 km south of Lille.

Three of our alumni, Michael Edwards, Head of EU Supply Chain Consulting at Amazon, Sarah Ashley Forder, Media Sales Manager and Pierre-Alexandre Coubard, Business Developer, were on hand to answer the students' many pertinent questions.

The visit to this 90,000 m² warehouse was an opportunity for these young professionals to discover the different stages in the supply chain, from the reception of lorry loads to the preparation of orders, including the sorting, storage and collection of products.

The students were able to observe the storage area, an immense space made up of large cupboards lined up over several metres, containing numbered storage compartments, all on several floors. More than 20 million items are stored in this warehouse. These items are then collected by the order pickers, who put them together before moving on to the order preparation area, where they are quickly packed and finally sent to the dispatch room on a conveyor belt, where they are sorted according to size and destination.

In this way, the students were able to relate their knowledge of the supply chain and purchasing to the realities of the field, while incorporating other important concepts for their training, such as the transport of goods, product safety, hygiene rules and the environment.
