Barometer 2025: A Generation That Won’t Compromise on Work
What do students expect from the job market? The Talents Barometer 2025, conducted by Opinionway for SKEMA Business School and EY, reveals a generation that knows exactly what it wants. Striking a balance between purpose and ambition, young professionals are looking for clear career prospects, supportive management, and a corporate culture aligned with their values.
Clear and Non-Negotiable Expectations
The study highlights key priorities for young professionals. Career progression is the top priority (96%), followed by competitive pay (48%) and a respectful work environment (30%). While 87% of students still favour large companies, their loyalty is no longer guaranteed: salary stagnation, unclear career paths, or a rigid company culture are all reasons for them to leave.
"We’re not just looking for a job—we want an environment where we can grow and make an impact", explains Victor Charpignon, SKEMA MIM student.
Artificial Intelligence: Excitement Meets Caution
Generative AI is drawing significant interest: 85% of young professionals are interested, and 44% are “very interested”. However, enthusiasm is tempered by concerns: 84% worry about a lack of regulation, while 83% see ethical risks. As a result, 60% expect their future employers to provide training on these tools.
A Generation Seeking Balance
While ambition remains a driving force, young professionals are unwilling to sacrifice their well-being. 55% believe good management is crucial to their engagement, while workplace atmosphere is a key factor, especially for women (62% vs. 55% of men). Gender equality (91%) and environmental responsibility (88%) are core values. Yet, only 18% would leave a company that does not align with their principles, highlighting a pragmatic approach. "Attracting young talent depends on strong values and the promise of learning from inspiring managers", says Patrick Vincent-Genod, Audit Partner at EY.
How Companies Can Attract and Retain Young Talent
The Talents Barometer 2025 identifies several strategies for engaging the next generation of professionals:
- Offer clear career progression: provide structured career paths from year one.
- Promote supportive management: a key factor in long-term retention.
- Foster an inclusive corporate culture: young professionals value respect and engagement.
- Invest in AI training: equip employees with essential digital skills.
